Huntsman World Senior Games ?? Seniors getting into sports competitions? Of course we are - if you have been active all of your life, why stop when you turn 55 or better? And if you haven't been active, maybe now is a good time to start exercising and enjoying it. I am giving this advice as I am sitting on the couch.
When couch potatoes start to compete - I'm in! But what would I wear? :)

Erika Rogers is a St George Utah area Realtor with a terrific Active Rain blog about things to do in the St George area.
And why do I read her blog? Because I live in a small town in Nevada - Mesquite, and St George is only 30 minutes away.
Mesquite is a great place to live, I love the small town atmosphere. But we don't have Macy's or See's Candy (yet) - and I like to let people know that if we don't have it, it is not that far away and the drive is beautiful!
On October 4, 2010 the Huntsman World Senior Games in St George Utah begins. Not familiar with this event? Many people aren't. You'd be surprised to find out that this is the largest senior sports competition in the world according to our mayor, Dan McAarthur.
Hundreds of seniors come from all over the world to compete in these games each year. The games began in 1987 as the World Senior Games, an international competition. Originally contestants had to be 55 or older to compete, they changed that requirement to 50 years old in 1988. In 1989, Jon M. Huntsman of the Huntsman Corporation, became the principal sponsor for the games. He recognized the value of seniors staying active, and living a healthy lifestyle. He also understood the financial impact this event could and would have on Utah.
In addition to the athletic events, there is always health screenings which include tests for breast and prostate cancer. There is also screenings for diabetes, glaucoma, high blood pressure and bone density to name a few. There's also a social side to these games. Concerts, dances and award socials play an important role encouraging participants to mingle with each other.
Many participants come to compete in the Huntsman World Senior Games and find this area so inviting that they return to purchase a home here in St George Utah. There's so much to do here, whether you enjoy bicycling, hiking, walking or golf. And the weather is just about perfect, year round!
Be sure to check out the Huntsman Senior Games if you're in town. The events run from October 4-16th, 2010. Opening ceremonies begin at 7:00pm on Tuesday, October 5, 2010. They are being held at the Hansen Stadium, Dixie State College. 500 S. 700 E. St George Utah. Admission is free.

Great post by Erika but, I love your introduction! What a great line..."If we don't have it [here], it's not that far away and the drive is beautiful." That just puts a beautiful mental image of your area in my mind!
Hope you're doing well, Virginia! Enjoy your Sunday...
Thanks, Debe - Erika's blog is a jewel for me. Mesquite has the basics, Super Walmart, some good restaurants, activities, but it is a small town of only about 20K people - St George, Utah has about 100K, they have everything to do. Shopping malls, festivals, lakes, fishing - my readers need to know that it is all available 30 minutes from here.
I am doing fine - glad to see you so active, Rock Star!
HA! I shoot Trap for sport. I am a fierce competitor and usually am high on any quad against shooters from 10-90 years old. All it takes is a love of the game, practice and a goal - - - winning!
HA! I also love your intro... I, personally, would drive for half a day to reach a SEES candy store! (I'm still an airplane flight away). Seniors shooting for sport, however, makes me a bit nervous. Thanks for the re-inspired post!
Virgina - That's why we have cars! Sounds like a lovely drive and sharing the amenities of a neighboring area is a wonderful plus for your readers.
Virginia-thanks for the re-blog! I loved your intro too;) I think I'll blog about See's Candy next, looks like that would be popular.
You know I love both St George & Mesquite :) I would love to retire in one of those towns!
Lenn - I already know that you are a fierce competitor - not just in sports! I just happen to be a spectator sportster - from little league games to senior pickle ball - love to watch.
Mara - I used to have to drive to Las Vegas - 80 miles for my See's candy fix, and I would eat a whole pound on the way home. Not kidding.
Norma - thanks, I wish I had thought of it before, we have some good St George bloggers here.
Erika - Can't wait for your See's post!
Renee - Call me in 30 years or so - I will find you a house. LOL
